Keeping the news under wraps for two months, Isabella expressed the difficulty of maintaining secrecy. She recounted experiencing symptoms during the fall, while beginning her freshman year at the University of Southern California, including headaches, nausea, and difficulty walking. Initially attributing it to vertigo, her condition worsened on Oct. 25 when she vomited blood.
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles identified a sizable 4-centimeter tumor at the back of Isabella’s brain, leading to a diagnosis of medulloblastoma, a rare form of brain cancer typically affecting children aged 5 to 9. Isabella underwent surgery on Oct. 27, the day before her 19th birthday, followed by a month of rehabilitation.
Sharing her positive progress, Isabella mentioned completing proton therapy, a specialized form of radiation employing proton beams instead of X-rays to target cancer cells. Expressing her joy at ringing the bell to mark the end of 30 sessions spanning six weeks, Isabella looks ahead with optimism. According to Johns Hopkins Medicine, up to 75% of children with medulloblastoma survive into adulthood when treated with a combination of surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy.
Michael Strahan faced a nearly three-week absence from “Good Morning America” during the fall, citing “personal family matters” at the time. The former NFL player also took a two-week hiatus from his role as a Fox NFL Sunday analyst before returning in mid-November.
